How To Apply
Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales
We’ll inspire you to achieve, no matter which A Levels you choose to study with us. In every classroom there’s an experienced and knowledgeable tutor who’ll give you confidence, relevant skills, and the motivation to achieve your full potential.
As a sixth form student at Coleg Cambria, you’ll also be valued as an individual and receive the care and support you need to secure your perfect career or higher education course. We have an outstanding reputation for student success for a reason.
In addition to the A level subjects you choose yourself, we will further support you to achieve your potential by enrolling you on the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales qualification which you will study as an additional A level and which will assist you to develop additional academic and employability skills.
To enrol on to an A level course you are required to have at least 5 GCSE’s at grade C or above including English/Welsh 1st language and maths. In addition, you will need to check the subject specific entry requirements in the course profiles below.
The majority of AS and A Level students are now timetabled for 4 days per week instead of 5 days per week.
The amount of lesson time devoted to each subject has not changed, but most students will find that they will be in lessons for most of the time they are onsite, having less free periods.
To be successful at A Levels it is vital that you devote significant amounts of time to studying outside of lessons and so you will need to carefully balance any other commitments you have – part time work or representative sport, for example – with the additional time you have to devote to studying for your subjects. A good “rule of thumb” is one hour of study outside of lesson for every hour of class.
If you make the decision to study an extra subject, it is highly likely that your timetable will cover 5 days.
Learners are always welcome to attend the College on the day that they are not timetabled to do so, this would be the perfect time to study outside of lessons or to seek further guidance from staff.

Studied – A Levels Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate
Currently – Entering third year of Natural Sciences at University of Cambridge.
“Studying my A Levels at Deeside 6th allowed me to access a variety of opportunities and support to learn and succeed and gave me the tools I needed to apply to the University of Cambridge, where I have loved studying for the past two years! With great facilities, incredibly supportive staff and an emphasis on taking control of your learning, the two years I spent at Coleg Cambria gave me brilliant preparation for going into higher education and beyond.”
Frankie McCamley
Studied – A Level English, Drama, Mathematics and French
Currently – Presenter and News Correspondent for the BBC
“I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do in the future, so I chose a range of different subjects to study at A Level. I’m now employed by the BBC as a Presenter and News Correspondent and studying at Yale Sixth gave me the confidence and skills to go onto university. I made some amazing friends, had some great teachers who I’ll never forget and had a great time in Wrexham!
“I look back on my time at Yale with pride and fondness and will never forget it!”

How To Apply For A Levels
To apply for A levels please choose 3 subjects. All A level students will also study the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales as an additional 4th A-level.
To enrol on to an A level course you are required to have at least 5 GCSE’s at grade C or above including English/Welsh 1st language and mathematics. In addition, you will need to check the subject specific entry requirements in the course profiles below.
If you are expecting to obtain at least 6 A* (8/9) grades at GCSE then you may also wish to consider choosing a further subject in addition to the 3 you have selected.
Should you be expected to achieve at least 5 A*/A (7/9) grades and wish to consider a further subject beyond the 3 you have chosen then a member of staff will contact you to discuss this as part of the application process.
When considering the number of A level subjects you wish to study, please remember that all A level learners are also automatically enrolled onto the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales qualification and this counts as a further A level subject.
When you find the subjects that you want to apply for click on “Add to Shortlist” for each of the subjects, ensuring you have shortlisted the subjects for the correct site (Deeside or Yale). When you have shortlisted the subjects you wish to apply for you can then click on “Apply for These”.
This will then take you to the online application form where you will need to create an account (or log into your existing account if you already have one).
Please follow the onscreen instructions and ensure that you complete all sections of the form. If information is missing or incomplete it will delay your application.

The Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales is an exciting new qualification that replaces the Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate that the College delivered successfully for many years.
It encourages independence, adds real-life experience to the curriculum, develops additional personal interests and promotes skills highly regarded by universities and employers across the UK, such as critical thinking, problem solving, creativity and innovation.
Further information about the qualification can be found on the WJEC’s website, Advanced Skills Baccalaureate.
Frequently Asked Questions
The Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales is a 2 year programme that has the same UCAS points and grading structure as an A Level and can be combined with both A Level and Level 3 vocational programmes. You will undertake 3 projects during the 2 years, one based on sustainability, one focussing on your future plans and one completed individually on a subject of your choice.
All A Level students will study the subject in addition to their other A Level subjects.
Many students taking a two year Level 3 vocational qualification will study the subject, although staff will discuss whether this may apply to you during the application process and will provide final confirmation once you enrol.
