Course Overview
The study of A level Literature increases understanding of how meaning is created in literary texts and develops the ability to respond to literary texts through discussion and written work. The course is suited to students who enjoy reading a wide range of literary texts.
Students will study poetry, prose and drama from various periods. There will be an element of wider reading and students will acquire a sophisticated knowledge of the technical vocabulary of literature. Students will be expected to explore multiple interpretations of texts and gain an understanding of the contexts relevant to those texts.
AS Level
Unit 1 Exam (20%) - Prose and Drama:
Section A: Fiction pre 1900 Jane Eyre
Section B: Drama Doctor Faustus (B Text)
Unit 2 Exam (20%) - Poetry : Phillip Larkin and Carol Ann Duffy
Section A: Critical examination of poetry
Section B: Poetry Comparison
A2 Level
Unit 3 Exam (20%) - Poetry pre 1900 and unseen poetry The Merchant’s Tale - Chaucer
Unit 4 Exam (20%) -Shakespeare - Antony and Cleopatra
Unit 5 Coursework ( 20%) - Prose Study ( comparison of 2 novels)

There will be a mock examination and regular assessments will be made throughout the course.
5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including English Language / Welsh (1st Language) and Maths.
