Course Overview
This course is designed for students who have an interest and enthusiasm for learning a language.

The AS/A level course provides a natural progression route for students who have studied the language at GCSE level. The four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are further developed and allow students to gain a deeper understanding of the French language.

Students will receive the support and encouragement they need to become confident, effective communicators and to take their place as members in our multilingual global society. As well as studying a range of contemporary topics, students also have the opportunity to gain an insight into the world of French cinema and literature.

We provide excellent resources for our students which enhance their learning experience.

We encourage our students to visit France and experience at first hand the French culture and way of life. For this reason, we offer travel opportunities for our students and they are also advised on opportunities for independent travel to France, perhaps on work experience or study abroad courses. We are keen to provide the opportunity for our students to put their language skills to practical use here at college. Small groups work every week with a foreign language assistant as well as having many opportunities for discussion and conversation in their lessons.
At AS level students’ speaking skills are assessed and they sit one written paper which covers Listening, Reading, Translation and Critical Response in writing.

At A level students’ speaking skills are assessed and they take two further written examinations, Listening, Reading and Translation as well as Critical and Analytical Response in writing.
5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including English Language / Welsh (1st Language) and Maths, plus meet the following criteria:

– Grade C/4 or above in GCSE French.

At Coleg Cambria we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your exams. The better your grades the more options you will have, and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher level course.
Modern Foreign Languages such as French are known as “facilitating A Levels”. That means that they are valued at all universities, including the top Russell Group of universities.

This course can be a significant stepping stone to further study or employment. Naturally, competence in a foreign language provides so many career opportunities and there are really no limits; there is a major national shortage of French speakers. Here are a few examples where languages are used at work: Business and Retail, Diplomatic Service, Disaster Management, Engineering, Film and Television, IT and Computing, Interpreting, Journalism, Law, Marketing, Media and Entertainment, Medicine, Outdoor Pursuits Instructor, Personal Assistant, Pilot, Sports Professional, Teaching, TESOL, Travel and Tourism, Au Pair.
Some courses may require equipment and/or uniforms to be purchased.
Please see attached equipment list for further information.
