Course Overview
The study of A level Literature increases understanding of how meaning is created in literary texts, and develops the ability to respond to literary texts through discussion and written work. The course is suited to students who enjoy reading a wide range of literary texts.

Students will study poetry, prose and drama from various periods. There will be an element of wider reading and students will acquire a sophisticated knowledge of the technical vocabulary of literature. Students will be expected to explore multiple interpretations of texts and gain an understanding of the contexts relevant to those texts.

AS Level
Unit 1 Exam (20%) - Prose and Drama:
Section A: Fiction pre 1900
Section B: Drama

Unit 2 Exam (20%) - Poetry
Section A: Critical examination of poetry
Section B: Poetry Comparison

A2 Level
Unit 3 Exam (20%) - Poetry pre 1900 and unseen poetry
Unit 4 Exam (20%) -Shakespeare
Unit 5 Coursework ( 20%) - Prose Study
There will be a mock examination and regular assessments will be made throughout the course.
5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including English Language / Welsh (1st Language) and Maths.

Note: Cannot be taken in combination with AS/A level English Combined Language and Literature.

At Coleg Cambria we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your exams. The better your grades the more options you will have, and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher level course.
English Literature will provide you with an excellent preparation for many courses in the Humanities at university, including Literature, combined English Language and Literature, Linguistics, Journalism and Education.

An A level in Literature is a great asset for any kind of career that requires you to express yourself effectively and to think analytically. If you are thinking of top Russell Group Universities, English Literature is one of the facilitating A Levels which do help aspiring applicants.
