Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol

Y Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol

The Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol lead the development of education and training through the medium of Welsh and bilingually in the post-16 sector in Wales. The College achieves this by working in partnership with universities, further education facilities and apprenticeship providers to build a first class inclusive Welsh medium education and training system.

In order to facilitate provision in the College, the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol’s work has been shared across different local branches.

The branch aims to support the College’s work and act as a direct point of contact for students and staff.

The Cambria Branch was established in September 2020, the Branch is constantly working to expand and develop Welsh medium academic and social provision in the College.

The branch works across the College’s five sites, and the work consists of facilitating and organising Welsh medium events, activities, presentations and resources and developing relevant work pathways for further education learners and apprentices.

The branch’s vision is to increase the use of the Welsh language and enrich opportunities through the medium of Welsh for learners.

A Branch Officer is appointed to each College and their role is to coordinate the work of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol and act as the local point of contact.

The Officer supports the College’s Welsh medium provision and holds a variety of activities and events (within courses and extra-curricular) in order to promote the social use of the Welsh language.

By virtue of the role, the Officer will try to ensure that the voice of the learners is heard and acted upon.

At Coleg Cambria, a program of social events is coordinated through the GymGym (Y Cymdeithas Gymraeg or the Wels Society), where learners and fluent Welsh speakers are welcome to join weekly to take part in fun activities.

Every year, the College appoints a group of enthusiastic learners to support the work of the Branch Officer and to promote the College’s Welsh medium and bilingual opportunities.

The aim of the scheme is to secure a network of ambassadors throughout Wales to encourage the use of the Welsh language. In September, eight Further Education Welsh ambassadors were appointed for the 2022/23 academic year.

My name is Carys Morgan. I am studying Agriculture level 3 at the College and work as a Welsh Ambassador on the Llysfasi site. Welsh is my first language and although I learn bilingually on my course, being able to do some of my work in Welsh is fantastic and a great help to me. It’s great to be able to choose which resources or which parts of the course I do in Welsh and my tutors are always a great help in that regard. I enjoy learning in Welsh because that’s what comes naturally to me – I got all my education through the medium of Welsh. In Llysfasi, there is a very close-knit Welsh-speaking community and I am also lucky that most of my teachers can speak Welsh.

Hello! My name is Catrin and I am a student in Deeside Sixth. I study Business, English and Film Studies. I am also a Welsh Ambassador, which brings me many special opportunities. Since I joined, I have met many other learners who can speak Welsh, and we meet often doing fun activities. This is very important to me as a person whose first language is Welsh and the College helps me to be bilingual. The College also gives me the opportunity to do my work in Welsh, and offers a special translation service so this is a great comfort. There is a lot of support around me including a personal Welsh tutor and Welsh medium resources and support. I’m looking forward to where Welsh and I will go in the future!

Hey! I’m Max and I’m a Welsh Ambassador in Deeside Sixth. I’m studying Law, History and Politics. The College has given me the opportunity to take part in many things such as a photoshoot to promote the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol and working on a Welsh stall during one of our open evenings. It is great to have the choice of presenting my work in Welsh and to have the opportunity to socialise through the medium of Welsh. Being bilingual is extremely important to me as it opens doors to all kinds of different opportunities.
