Further Mathematics - A Level

Mathematics:
At AS level Unit 1 is assessed through a 2.5 hour written paper based on Pure Maths; Unit 2 tests Applied Maths and has a section based on Statistics and a section based on Mechanics. The Unit 2 paper is 1.75 hours.

Unit 1 is worth 25% and Unit 2 is worth 15% of the full A level qualification.

At A2 level, Units 3 and 4 are assessed by two written papers. Unit 3 is assessed through a 2.5 hour written paper based on Pure Maths; Unit 4 examines Applied Maths and has a section based on Statistics and a section based on Differential Equations, Numerical Methods and Mechanics. The Unit 4 paper is 1.75 hours.

Unit 3 is worth 35% and Unit 4 is worth 25% of the full A level qualification.

Further Mathematics:
At AS level Unit 1 is assessed through a 1.5 hour written paper based on Pure Maths; Unit 2 tests Statistics and is assessed through a 1.5 hour written paper. Unit 3 tests Mechanics and is assessed through a 1.5 hour written paper.

Units 1, 2 and 3 are worth 13 1/3% each, and in total are worth 40% of the AS level qualification.

At A2 level, Units 4 and 5/6 are assessed by two written papers. Unit 4 is assessed through a 2.5 hour written paper based on Pure Maths; Unit 5 or 6 examines Statistics (unit 5) or Mechanics (unit 6), candidates only sitting one of the papers and is based on a 1.75 hour exam.

Unit 4 is worth 35% and Unit 5/6 is worth 25% of the full A level qualification.

There will be internal mock examinations on published dates to provide realistic examination experience.

5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including English Language / Welsh (1st Language) and meet the following criteria:

– GCSE Maths at grade A*/A/7-9 on higher tier
– GCSE in a related subject at grade A*/A/7-9

A level Mathematics is relevant to a wide range of Higher Education courses. In addition Mathematics would be a desirable qualification in many occupations; The Civil Service, finance, banking, in technical, computing, scientific and engineering work, and in governmental and developmental institutions.
