Course Overview
Are you passionate about animals and ready to start your journey in animal care? This course is designed for you, whether you're just starting out or looking to develop your existing passion for animals. You'll gain a strong understanding of animal care through hands-on experience and classroom learning, all designed to help you prepare for a rewarding career.
What You'll Learn
This exciting course provides a fantastic introduction to the world of animal care! You'll be actively involved in caring for the wide range of animals right here at the college, including rabbits, guinea pigs, hens, ducks, and many more.
You'll develop vital skills and knowledge in subjects like:
*Animal health and wellbeing
*Safe animal handling
*Wildlife and conservation
*Feeding and watering animals
*Understanding animal accommodation.
Our excellent Animal Care Centre provides you with amazing opportunities to gain valuable practical skills. You'll also complete 60 hours of group work experience in an organised placement, giving you real-world insight into the industry. Learning will be engaging and fun, using a variety of methods including practical work and modern learning technology.
You will have the opportunity to undertake Essential Skills Wales qualifications in Communication and Application of Number. These qualifications will help support your progression to higher levels of learning. You'll have a Progress Coach to support you every step of the way, ensuring you have all the help you need to succeed.

For all learners who are looking to progress onto this L1 course from an entry programme you must have achieved your E3 qualification, progressed in Maths and English and hit all of the targets in your ILP.

You’ll be assessed through two online tests and a variety of practical and theory-based tasks. Throughout the course, you’ll also take part in practice assessments to help you master the content effectively. Your work experience in the animal care industry will also contribute to your assessment.
Upon completion, you’ll be well-equipped to pursue exciting roles such as a Kennel-Hand, Cattery Maid, Pet Shop Assistant, or Grooming Assistant. You can also progress to a Level 2 Animal Care Technical subject, opening even more doors for your future!
