Course Overview

The aim of this programme is to provide a work-related, competence-based qualification. It reflects the skills and knowledge needed to effectively do a job within the animal care industry, and shows that a learner is competent in this area of work. The Pet Care and Retail route is suitable for most learners in an animal care working environment, who also undertake elements of pet care and retail. However, other pathways are available, including Zoos/Wildlife Establishments, Dog Grooming, Animal Care and Welfare, Animal Training and Service Dog Handling.

This level is appropriate if you have some knowledge and you want to prove your competence in your role, and may help you to move from a junior to a senior position. You may also be looking for a qualification to prepare you for progression to Level 3 qualifications.

To earn this qualification, you must complete a range of mandatory and optional units, totalling 44 or more credits. The exact selection of optional units you can choose from may depend on your job role. Examples of units include:

*Make sure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
*Deliver basic treatments to animals
*Control and restrain animals
*Maintain the cleanliness and biosecurity of the animal care working environment
*Keep stock at required levels in a retail environment
*Provide information and advice to customers in a retail environment
*Process payments for purchases in a retail environment

If completing this course as part of an Apprenticeship Framework, learners are required to undertake the Essential Skills qualifications at level 1, in Application of Number and Communication.

Entry Requirements

Suitable learners of all ages are invited to join anytime of the year. There are no minimum requirements, but a job scope assessment and initial assessments will be carried out to ensure that the correct course is chosen.

How you will be assessed

Assessment in the work area takes place throughout the programme, along with written and/or oral questioning, used to assess competence and underpinning knowledge. Your College Assessor will visit the workplace which must comply with working in a safe environment. Online support is available through a virtual learning environment.

Accreditation of prior learning is also considered, but this can be time bound.

Successful candidates may consider progression to the level 3 Diploma in Work-based Animal Care.
