City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Work-based Animal Care (Dog Grooming)

The aim of this programme is to provide a work-related, competence-based qualification. It reflects the skills and knowledge needed to effectively do a job within the animal care industry, and shows that a learner is competent in this area of work. The Dog Grooming route is suitable for most learners in a dog grooming setting. However, other pathways are available, including Zoos/Wildlife Establishments, Animal Care & Welfare, Pet Care and Retail, Animal Training and Service Dog Handling for learners employed in other animal care settings.

This level is appropriate if you have some knowledge and you want to prove your competence in your role, and may help you to move from a junior to a senior position. You may also be looking for a qualification to prepare you for progression to Level 3 qualifications.

To earn this qualification, you must complete a range of mandatory and optional units, totalling 44 or more credits. The exact selection of optional units you can choose from may depend on your job role. Examples of units include:

Make sure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
Prepare and groom dogs prior to bathing
Bathe and clean dogs
Dry dogs and prepare their coats for styling
Handle payments from clients
Control and restrain animals
Deliver basic treatments to animals

If completing this course as part of an Apprenticeship Framework, learners are required to undertake the Essential Skills qualifications at level 1, in Application of Number and Communication.
