Course Overview

The aim of this programme is to provide a work-related, competence-based qualification. It
reflects the skills and knowledge needed to effectively do a job within the animal care industry,
and shows that a learner is competent in this area of work. The Dog Grooming route is suitable for
most learners in a dog grooming setting. However, other pathways are available, including Animal
Care and Welfare, Zoos and Wildlife Establishments, Animal Welfare Enforcement, Pet Care and
Retail, Animal Training, Dog/Animal Wardens, and Animals in Education and Entertainment.
This level is ideal if you've worked in animal care for some time.  You have plenty of experience,
and you want to show that you have the skills you need to do your job well.   This may be part of
your professional development, or preparation for higher-level training.
To earn this qualification, you must complete a range of mandatory and optional units, totalling 54
or more credits. The exact selection of optional units you can choose from may depend on your
job role, and can be tailored to meet your training needs, and the needs of your employer.
Optional units include:
● Assess and plan dog grooming work
● Carrying out styling and finishing of dogs
● Handle animals
● Recognise and interpret the behaviour of animals
● Plan, supervise and control the movement of animals
● Promote, monitor and maintain health, safety and security of the workplace
Suitable learners of all ages are invited to join anytime of the year. There are no minimum
requirements, but a job scope assessment and initial assessments will be carried out to ensure
that the correct course is chosen.
Assessment in the work area takes place throughout the programme, along with written and/or
oral questioning, used to assess competence and underpinning knowledge. An assignment must
also be completed. Your College Assessor will visit the workplace which must comply with working
in a safe environment. Online support is available through a virtual learning environment.
Accreditation of prior learning is also considered, but this can be time bound.
Achieving one of these qualifications can help you work in roles such as:

● Dog groomer
● Animal technician
● Applied animal behaviourist
● Assistance dog trainer
● Dog handler
● Dog trainer
● Kennel worker
In many cases, funding may be available towards the cost of the course. Please contact our
employer engagement team on 0300 30 30 006 or email employers@cambria.ac.uk to discuss
funding eligibility.
