Level 1 Hairdressing learners from Coleg Cambria Yale in Wrexham volunteered at the Evening of Dreams, held at Maggie’s Centre in Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, Bodelwyddan.

The event was organised by Ffansi Ffrogs, based in Ruthin, and Colwyn Bay’s Bay Belle Brides, and brought together patients, oncology nurses, young models, and supporters to raise vital funds for the cherished cause.

Under the guidance of Lecturer Geraldine Ireland, learners spent the afternoon and evening providing hair and makeup for the models and patients currently receiving treatment.

For the cohort, it was both valuable industry experience and a meaningful way to give back.

“The students worked tirelessly throughout the day and evening, delivering exceptional hair and make-up services,” said Geraldine.

“Their dedication and quality of work were outstanding. This was an extraordinary opportunity for them to gain hands-on experience while supporting an amazing cause.”

Wendy Thompson, Head of Ffansi Ffrogs Prom Experiences, also praised the group: “It is amazing that these girls gave up their Saturday to be part of this event. They made five oncology nurses, and two cancer patients look and feel incredible.

“One lady hadn’t had her hair up since her wedding day. She never believed it would be possible again. She felt like a ‘celebrity’ – Cambria’s students gave her that confidence back.”

The learners also supported the event behind the scenes, helping prepare the space, assemble goodie bags, and assist the team throughout the show.

“They were wonderful ambassadors for the college,” Wendy added.

“Seeing their work come to life on stage was emotional, many had tears in their eyes knowing the difference they helped make.”

Maggie’s North Wales Centre Head John Costigan praised the learners and organisers.

He said: “We are so grateful to everyone who took part in Evening of Dreams, it is wonderful the models on the night were supported by students from Coleg Cambria Yale.

“Maggie’s has been providing expert cancer support across the UK for 30 years, but our centre in North Wales has only been open for a couple of months, which makes it even more special to see the community get behind us in this way.

“Our support is free, and our centres are open to anyone living with cancer, as well as for family and friends.

“We rely almost entirely on voluntary donations to offer a full programme of support, from cancer support groups to relaxation and yoga workshops. You can also get expert advice from a Cancer Support Specialist, help with money worries and so much more, so once again a huge thank you to everyone involved.”
