Course Overview

The course covers a thorough introduction to the principles, values, and knowledge required for working in Health and Social Care with both adults and children and young people.

Core qualification themes:
- Principles and Values
- Health and Wellbeing
- Professional Practice
- Safeguarding
- Health and Safety.

Principles and Context qualification mandatory units:
- Growth and Development
- The role and responsibilities of workers in the Health and Social Care sector
- The role and purpose of promoting Health and Well-being.

Sector Engagement:
Students will participate in sector engagement experiences, including a minimum of 60 hours of work placement during the academic year.
4 GCSEs at grade D/3 or above including English Language/Welsh (1st Language) and Maths OR Successful completion of a relevant Level 1 programme which must include achievement of numeracy and literacy.

You must be able to demonstrate the potential to work independently and safely in health and social care settings.

At Coleg Cambria we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your exams. The better your grades the more options you will have, and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher level course.

The Core qualification is assessed by one externally marked multiple-choice question paper.

The Principles and Context qualification is assessed by one externally set and marked written examination and one internally assessed assignment, which will draw on sector engagement and work placement experience.


Completion of this qualification can lead to further study, including:

– Level 3 in Health and Social Care: Principles and Contexts.
– Advanced GCE in Health and Social Care and Childcare.
– Level 3 Health and Social Care: Practice.
