Course Overview
This qualification provides you with the essential knowledge and understanding required to work in childcare. You'll explore the core principles and values that underpin children's care, play, learning, and development practices.
Key subjects covered include:
- Supporting core practice in children’s care, play, learning, and development
- Supporting play, learning, growth, and development
- Supporting nutrition and hydration in early years
- Responding to signs of potential illness and infestation/infection
- Beginning to understand child development
- Safeguarding children
Alongside the core qualification, you will also complete the Level 2 Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development: Practice and Theory qualification, which provides a license to practice for working with children.

4 GCSEs at grade D/3 or above including English Language/Welsh (1st Language) and Maths OR Successful completion of a relevant Level 1 programme which must include achievement of numeracy and literacy.
You must be able to demonstrate the potential to work independently and safely in childcare settings.

At Coleg Cambria we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your exams. The better your grades the more options you will have, and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher level course.
The core qualification includes an externally marked assessment with a multiple-choice examination. For the Practice and Theory qualification, there’s an externally marked exam that can be taken in January or May. To gain your Level 2 license to practice, you’ll be assessed on your compulsory work placement, where you’ll complete 280 hours throughout the year with a designated assessor.
Upon successful completion of both the core qualification and the Level 2 Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development: Practice and Theory, you’ll be ready for employment or can progress to the Level 3 Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development: Practice and Theory, which can lead to a university degree.
