What You'll Learn
On this full-time, one-year diploma, you'll dive into both professional cookery and food and beverage service. Our industry professionals will guide you through practical, hands-on sessions in the larder, pastry kitchen, and kitchen. You'll also learn front-of-house skills, including serving, barista, bar service skills and reception duties for on-site and external functions.
Beyond the practical skills, you'll also develop:
- Essential Skills Wales for your personal and professional growth.
- Your Welsh language skills.
- Key literacy and numeracy skills.
A compulsory work experience element is built into this course, giving you invaluable real-world experience and boosting your skills and knowledge for the industry. You'll gain experience in our very own restaurant, Ial Restaurant, and at various external hospitality venues. Additionally, you'll have opportunities for exciting extracurricular experiences during evenings and weekends, where you can fully engage in planning, preparing and delivering events for customers.

4 GCSEs at grade D/3 or above including Maths and English Language/Welsh (1st Language) or successful completion of a relevant Level 1 qualification which must include achievement of numeracy and literacy.

We use a variety of assessment methods to ensure you’re confident in your abilities. You’ll be assessed through observations, written assignments, and timed synoptic tests for your cookery units, where you’ll create individual dishes based on course criteria. Your food and beverage skills will be assessed in real working environments, including the restaurant, events, functions, and during your work experience. Some of your underpinning knowledge will be assessed using short paper-based tests.
A qualification in hospitality and catering is an international passport to a world of exciting work! This industry is one of the largest employers in the UK, with 2.2 million jobs and 200,000 full-time opportunities available each year.
