Course Overview

Are you ready to explore how the legal system works and challenge your thinking? This A Level Law course will equip you with the skills to analyse issues, construct logical arguments, and understand the laws that shape our society.

What You'll Discover
In this course, you’ll dive into the workings of the legal system and evaluate its effectiveness. You will learn about the different sources of law, from Parliament to the Welsh Assembly, and evaluate influences on law reform. You’ll also gain a strong understanding of how the law operates in practice by studying the civil and criminal court systems and sentencing.

Year 1: Your Foundation in Law
In your first year, you'll build a solid foundation by exploring the English and Welsh Legal Systems. You’ll learn how laws are made, including delegated legislation and the role of the Welsh Assembly. You’ll also get hands-on experience by taking part in debates and mock trials.

Here’s a snapshot of what you’ll cover:
* The Legal System: Discover law-making, statutory interpretation, and the use of precedent and case law.
* Civil Courts: Learn about the civil court system and the criminal process.
* The Law of Tort: Examine civil claims, including the Tort of Negligence and Occupiers Liability, and learn how damages are calculated.

Year 2: Delving into Criminal Law and Human Rights
In your second year, you'll critically examine the role of law enforcement and the police. You’ll also explore criminal law and human rights, giving you a deeper understanding of the justice system.

You’ll get to grips with:
Human Rights: Critically examine human rights, such as freedom of expression and the right to privacy, as well as the restrictions on these rights.
Criminal Law: Learn the definition of crime, strict liability, and factors that can negate criminal liability.
Offences and Defences: Study offences against the person, property offences, and different legal defences.
5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including English Language / Welsh (1st Language) and Maths.

At Coleg Cambria we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your exams. The better your grades the more options you will have, and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher level course.
Throughout the course, a variety of assessments will be used to help you track your progress. You’ll also complete an internal mock exam in January for both AS and A2 content. The final exams include essay-style questions, stimulus response tasks, and case study scenarios.
This course isn’t just for aspiring lawyers—it’s a learning experience that will help you develop the ability to analyse issues and build strong, logical arguments. A Level Law is highly respected by universities and can lead to a surprisingly wide range of careers.

Our students have gone on to exciting roles in:
* Management and commerce
* Local government and social work
* The police force and legal executive roles
* And of course, the legal profession.
