Course Overview

Ready to explore the dynamic world of media? This A Level Media Studies course will equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to succeed in a fast-paced and exciting industry. You'll dive deep into how media shapes our world, from the news you read online to the films you watch at the cinema, all while developing your own creative production skills.

What You’ll Learn
Year 1: Laying the Foundation
You will investigate the media by studying key concepts like media language, representation, media industries, and audiences. You'll apply these concepts to a range of media products and explore:
* Selling Images: Analyse how advertising and music videos create meaning and target audiences.
* News in the Online Age: Discover how news is produced and consumed in today's digital world.
* Film Industries: Journey from local Welsh productions to the blockbusters of Hollywood.

You’ll also put your knowledge into practice by creating your own media production. You will:
Conduct research and plan your project.
Create a production.
Reflect on how you constructed representations and used conventions to reach your target audience.

Year 2: More in depth
In your second year, you’ll explore a variety of contrasting media forms in depth. You will study:
* Television in the Global Age: Explore how television has evolved and is consumed on a global scale.
* Magazines: Mainstream and Alternative Media: Compare and contrast different types of magazines and their audiences.
* Media in the Digital Age: Video Games: Unpack the world of video games and their cultural impact.

Building on the previous year's learning, you’ll also complete a practical cross-media production. This unit focuses on investigative research, which will inform your production and lead to a critical analysis of a key media concept.
