Course Overview

Are you passionate about animals and ready to begin a fulfilling career? Our Entry to Animal Care course at Northop is designed for you, whether you're just starting out or looking to gain essential skills in animal care. This course offers a hands-on introduction to the world of animal care, giving you the practical experience and knowledge you need to succeed.

What You’ll Learn
You’ll get involved in helping to care for a wide variety of animals right here at the college! This course provides a strong foundation, covering key areas such as:

*Understanding animal health and wellbeing
*Safe and effective animal handling techniques
*Proper feeding and watering practices
*Maintaining clean and suitable animal accommodation.

You’ll also gain valuable practical skills at our excellent Animal Care Centre, which is home to over a hundred species of animals, including rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mice, hens, ducks, ferrets, dogs, sheep, goats, pigs, and fish. This hands-on experience, combined with important theoretical knowledge, will give you a real head start in your chosen career path.

To make your learning as engaging as possible, you’ll experience a variety of teaching methods, from classroom activities and group work to practical sessions and modern learning technology. We'll also focus on developing your literacy and numeracy skills, and once you're ready, you'll have the chance to achieve Essential Skills Wales qualifications in Communication and Application of Number.

You'll have a dedicated Pastoral Coach who will support you every step of the way, ensuring any learning needs are met so you can succeed.
This course is aimed at learners aged 16-18 years old.

No formal entry requirements are required.

At Coleg Cambria we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your exams. The better your grades the more options you will have, and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher level course.
You’ll be assessed through a range of practical and theory-based tasks. Throughout the course, you’ll take part in informal practice assessments to help you learn the content effectively.
Upon successful completion of this course, you’ll be ready to take your next steps! You could progress to our Level 1 Animal Care (Technical) or Level 1 Introduction to Animal Care courses, subject to meeting the criteria. Alternatively, you’ll be well-prepared for roles such as a kennel-hand, cattery maid, pet shop assistant, or grooming assistant.
Some courses may require kit/uniform to be purchased. Please see attached kit list for further information.
