Course Overview
Our PCET programme provides you with a nationally recognised qualification that enables you to explore a range of teaching careers within the Life-Long Learning sector. This includes, Further Education, youth work provision, the adult and community sector, work-based education, training in HM forces, prison education, industry and commercial training departments.

Note: The PCET is focused on teaching within the post compulsory sector, therefore it does not lead to QTS which is a requirement to teach in school settings.

There are two courses available depending on your existing qualifications:

Professional Graduate Certification of Education (PGCE) PCET - Level 6

Note: The PGCE PCET is for graduates who wish to teach their degree subject or an area they are qualified in to Level 3 or above.

Professional Certificate of Education (PCE) PCET - Level 5

Note: The PCE PCET is for students who have a level 3 qualification in the area they wish to teach and industry experience.

Graduate students (studying the PCET at Level 6) and non graduate students (studying the PCET at Level 5) will follow the same programme of study, however they will be assessed at the different levels.

Students can choose to study the PCET at either our Yale or Deeside site with all lectures and seminars taking place over one day per week. This can be completed either full time (1 year of study) or part time (2 years of study).

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

The programme is accredited by Aberystwyth University and is delivered by highly experienced staff at Coleg Cambria who have significant industry experience.

Participative student-centred learning approaches are adopted which require the student to engage with a variety of teaching methods such as group discussions, debate and blended learning methods. This student-centred approach allows students to take responsibility for their own learning with tutors being seen as facilitators of learning, providing resources, stimulating, supporting and challenging as required.

The team prides itself on the high level of support and guidance provided, which is regularly highlighted within student feedback.

MODULES:

You will study 6 of the following modules of 20 credits each.

• Effective Teaching for Effective Learning 1

WORK PLACEMENT

Both routes require students to complete a minimum of 100 hours of teaching (over the duration of the programme). If you are not already in teaching employment, we will support you in trying to secure a teaching placement (and mentor). However, please note that students are ultimately responsible for arranging their own teaching placement and finding a suitable subject mentor to support their professional teaching practice.

Students working in the FE and work-based learning sectors are required to register with the Education Workforce Council (EWC) and this process is facilitated through programme team links with EWC representatives.

Students wishing to teach in HE are signposted to membership of Advance HE as part of their CPD.

A range of assessment methods throughout the programme will include reports, reflective journals, teaching practice observations, essays, presentations and a teaching folder. There are no formal examinations on the PCET (PGCE/PCE).
