Course Overview
The UAL Extended Diploma in Sound Engineering provides the opportunity to explore the fundamentals of technical audio work and music production in a vocational & project-based manner. The course builds the practical skills you need to work as a Sound Engineer in fields such as Live Sound, Studio Music Production, Broadcast Engineering, Acoustics and Audio Post-production for Film, TV, & Computer Games, while also providing the technical and academic knowledge required for further specialist study at university.

Live Sound Production will develop skills in front of house engineering, monitor mixing and stage lighting, whilst also expanding skills in organising and managing live events. Studio recording will enable learners to plan, setup and manage industry standard studio sessions, working directly with musicians to capture and produce high quality tracks using modern industry standard recording equipment, in a purpose built studio environment. Music production will develop abilities in using music sequencing software (DAW) giving students the skills to produce professional standard mixes, utilising MIDI and audio editing techniques to produce remixes and original songs.

Later in the course, learners will have the opportunity to focus on areas such as producing sound for film and media products, create extended professional recordings and develop professional quality mixing and editing skills, also covering industry standard distribution and mastering techniques.

There are opportunities for work experience throughout the course, with strong industry links to music venues and recording studios in North Wales and the North West, where many of our students participate alongside their studies. There is a very high-demand for multi-skilled operators across the wider creative industries, a £100bn a year growth area for the UK economy predicted to create 900,000 additional jobs by 2030.

Students who successfully complete this course will gain the UAL Level 3 Diploma in Music Performance and Production (Music Production)
The course carries up to 168 UCAS points and is suitable for entry to a large range of well regarded undergraduate degree courses nationally, with a proven track record of successful student progression into both university and directly into industry. Throughout the course, learners will develop their understanding of the music industry and how to prepare themselves effectively for employment in the area.

Each unit of skill-building study is graded on a pass/fail basis. At the end of each year you will study a final major project unit which enables you to specialise in an area of your choice, which will form your final overall grade. You will be assessed on both portfolio & coursework and practical tasks, as well as through participation in real-life vocational productions.
5 or more GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including English/Welsh (1st Language).

For progression learners successful completion of a relevant Level 2 qualification at Pass level.

At Coleg Cambria we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your exams. The better your grades the more options you will have, and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher level course.
