Course Overview
The Level 3 Diploma can be taken as a one year Diploma or as a full two year Extended Diploma. The course covers a range of areas, focusing on different aspects of music performance, music creation and composition and the music industry.

Whilst the emphasis will be on the practical application of music skills, working with your instruments and playing in groups and bands, we will also look at popular music history and its traditions and its many different styles and genres. You will also look at how the music industry works, as well as learning about music theory and how it contributes to composition and creativity.

The course consists of a series of projects which will build your skills and understanding in these areas and culminates in a final major music project that focuses on an area of your choice that you wish to specialise in or learn more about, for instance live performance, composition or instrumental study.

Example Projects:
Live Music Performance - Performing to an Audience.
Composition and Arranging - Composing and creating new music.
Production - Using digital audio workstations (Mac & Logic) to create and produce your own beats, grooves, compositions and remixes.
Studio & Session Musicianship - how to apply music theory and instrumental knowledge in creative music making.
Popular Music in Context - analysing different styles and genres and their meaning and place in society, as well as looking at how artists use music as a form of expression and communication.

Students who successfully complete this course will gain the UAL Level 3 Diploma in Music Performance
All units and projects are internally assessed and internally verified, and an overall grade for the qualification is then awarded upon completion of your major music project and is internally and externally assessed.

To help you improve and enhance your skills you will receive feedback on a regular basis from your tutors as you work through each project. Each year is made up of a series of skills building projects that you must pass before moving on to your final project, which will contribute towards your final grade for the year.
5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including English/Welsh (1st Language).
A Music based subject at C/4 or above is desirable but not essential, or for progression learners a Level 2 qualification.

Following application for this course, prospective Level 3 learners will also be required to engage in a short, ‘taster’ entrance project in which learners will have the opportunity to showcase their practical instrument or production skills as well as their written work. This ‘taster’ entrance project is designed to gauge the learner’s suitability for the course and to help learners decide whether the course is the right choice for you.

At Coleg Cambria we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your exams. The better your grades the more options you will have, and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher level course.
Level 3 Diplomas are valued by employers and in Higher Education. This course will prepare you for employment in the Creative Industries and will support your application to university onto courses such as music performance, composition, production or music business.
Some courses may require kit lists to be purchased. Please see attached kit list for further information.
