Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Animal Management

This course provides an in-depth insight into the animal industry and animal care, developing your skills, knowledge and experience at an advanced level in order to gain employment in the sector. You will be involved in helping to care for the wide range of animal species at the college.

The subjects you will study include animal health, behaviour and communication, nutrition, animal biology, genetics, welfare and breeding, wildlife, ecology, care of exotic, aquatic and avian species, zoological collections, business management, customer care and retail merchandising, animal training, rehabilitation, estate skills and more. In year two, this pathway has a clear focus on the management of exotic animals in zoological collections.

The excellent Animal Care Centre will give you the opportunity to gain valuable practical skills, with access to over a hundred species of animals including marmosets, chinchillas, ferrets, a variety of lizard, snake and tortoise species, aquarium fish, parakeets and other birds, amphibians, invertebrates and rare Welsh farm breeds. Level 3 learners will work with the full range of animal species, practising aspects of animal health, feeding, handling and accommodation. You will also cover a wide range of underpinning knowledge and this combination will give you a head start in your chosen career path. Learning will be as fun as possible and you will learn through a variety of methods, including lectures, individual and group work, half a day per week of practical work, and will use a range of modern learning technology.

English and Maths are an integral part of the programme and we will work with you to improve your literacy and numeracy skills, as well as provide an opportunity to re-sit English and Maths GCSEs where relevant.

You will also study the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification.

This course is the equivalent of doing 3 or 4 A-levels depending on the route you are on.
