Course Overview
Do you like working outdoors and are you looking for a practical career path?
Do you enjoy working with your hands and learning new skills?
Do you have an interest in Agriculture, Conservation, Forestry or Land-based Machinery?
Level 1 is ideal for learners who are entering the land-based sector, either as a school leaver or as adults who are new to the sector and want to gain the basic knowledge and skills needed to move on to further study or get an entry-level job working in a land-based industry.
If this sounds like you, then you may enjoy developing a career in any of these Land Based industries. Do not worry if you do not know much about them yet, this course will help you gain the skills and knowledge you need.
There are two mandatory subjects:
• Safe and effective working in the land-based industries
• Preparing to work in the land-based industries
And five additional subjects:
• Assist with the use of transport and the maintenance of tools and equipment
• Contribute to the construction and maintenance of structures and surfaces
• Carry out tractor operations
• Introduction to wildlife and conservation
• Introduction to Production Livestock and Breeds
You will learn many practical skills from these units, and will work with farm machinery, forestry tools, build and repair wildlife habitats and help to administer health treatments to farm livestock.
Educational trips are an important part of the course which include trade shows and industrial visits.
This very successful course provides an introduction to all our Land-based areas. You will develop practical skills for working in these industries. In addition, the course will help you to develop a wide range of adaptable skills such as planning and communication skills, team building activities and other work skills, Literacy and Numeracy are integral to the course. The course offers a first step to a successful career in the Land-based industry.

This course is assessed by observation of practical skills, verbal questioning, written assignments and two on-line tests.
4 GCSEs at grade E/2 or above including Maths or English/Welsh (1st Language) or Science, or successful completion of a relevant Entry Level Qualification.
Students progressing from Entry 3 Level must show Literacy and Numeracy skills at Entry 3 Level or above in order to enrol.
At Coleg Cambria we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your exams. The better your grades the more options you will have, and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher level course.

Upon successful completion, students may be able to progress to the Level 2 in their chosen Land-based Industry. For successful progression onto level 2 courses student must achieve their Level 1 at Distinction grade and GCSE Maths and Welsh First Language/English at grade D/3 or equivalent.
