Course Overview

Are you ready to unleash your creativity and explore a world of artistic possibilities? This A Level Art & Design course is a challenging, rewarding, and exciting programme designed for you if you have a keen interest in Art and Design. With no exams, it's a coursework-based journey that allows you to truly immerse yourself in your passion.

What You'll Learn
This is the broadest of all the A Level Art and Design specialisms, covering a wide variety of media and techniques. You'll gain a strong educational grounding for a diverse range of careers, broadening your transferable skills that are highly sought after by employers and universities alike. This includes developing your creativity, problem-solving abilities, independent learning, organisation, and communication skills, all while encouraging your unique creative potential.

You'll participate in practical and theoretical workshops, with plenty of opportunities to experiment with a range of media and develop skills through various activities and specialisms. This includes:
* Photography
* Textiles
* Fashion
* Fine Art
* Drawing
* Painting
* 3D Design
* Graphics
* Printmaking

Your practical work will be supported by critical analysis of relevant sources and research. You'll have the chance to explore processes using our specialist-equipped art and design studios to produce your personal portfolio of work. If you wish to specialise after the skills-building part of the course, you can develop your own personal projects in any direction with the support of our skilled teaching staff.

Expect to work with both traditional art materials and the latest digital media, using industry-standard iMac computers and Adobe software. You'll also have opportunities to collaborate with artists, designers, and craftspeople. Enhance your studies by participating in cultural and contextual activities, educational visits, external exhibitions, and creative industry competitions.
5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including English Language / Welsh (1st Language) and Maths, plus the following criteria:

Grade B/6 in an Art related subject

At Coleg Cambria we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your exams. The better your grades the more options you will have, and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher level course.
At AS Level, you’ll complete one non-exam assessment unit:
* Unit 1 – Personal Creative Enquiry: This is an extended, exploratory project/portfolio based on themes and subjects that are personal and meaningful to you. It’s internally assessed and externally moderated.

At A2 Level, you’ll have one non-exam assessment unit and one exam unit:
* Unit 2 – Personal Investigation: This is a major, in-depth critical and practical investigative project/portfolio, which includes an extended written element of at least 1000 words.
* Unit 3 – Externally Set Assignment: This assignment is set by the awarding body.

All units are internally assessed and externally moderated.
Our students have an excellent track record of success, progressing to top universities and securing employment both in the UK and internationally. Many use the skills gained from this course to pursue a wide variety of Art and Design degrees at leading UK universities, including prestigious institutions such as Goldsmiths, the University of the Arts London, Falmouth, Edinburgh, and Glasgow, as well as the Ruskin School of Art, Oxford University. Interestingly, our students have also successfully progressed to courses in Medicine, Forensic Science, English, Business-related courses, and Social Sciences, demonstrating the broad applicability of the skills you’ll develop.

You may also choose to progress onto a Level 3/4 Foundation Diploma in Art & Design (pre-degree).
