Course Overview

Are you ready to explore the fascinating world of language? This A Level course will deepen your understanding of how language works and expand your knowledge of various aspects of language study. You'll develop your awareness of key language systems and learn to apply this knowledge to analyse a wide range of texts, both spoken and written, from different time periods. Plus, you'll enhance your writing skills, learning to tailor your language effectively for different audiences, purposes, and genres.

What You'll Learn;
AS Level (Year 1):
* Unit 1: Exploring Language (Written examination: 1 hour 45 minutes)
Section A: Analysing Language
Section B: Contemporary English

* Unit 2: Language Issues and Original Writing (Written examination: 2 hours)
One question in three parts: one essay on a language issue, and one original writing task, plus commentary linked to the language issue selected

A2 Level (Year 2)
* Unit 3: Language over Time (Written examination: 1 hour 30 mins)
One multi-part question and one essay question analysing language change over time

* Unit 4: Spoken Texts and Creative Re-casting (Written examination: 2 hours)
Section A: Analysing Spoken Language
Section B: Creative Re-casting

* Unit 5: Language and Identity (Non-examination assessment: 2500-3500 words)
An investigation based on one of the following: language and self-representation, language and gender, language and culture, or language diversity
5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including English Language / Welsh (1st Language) and Maths.

Note: Cannot be taken in combination with AS/A level English Combined Language and Literature.

At Coleg Cambria, we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your exams. The better your grades the more options you will have, and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher level course.
You’ll have a mock examination each year, and regular assignments will be set to track your progress

English Language is relevant to a wide range of HE courses and careers. It provides excellent preparation for any university course in English.

The skills that are acquired through the course will enhance students’ use of the English Language and make it ideal for students wishing to pursue careers in fields such as journalism and the media, law and teaching. The focus on language frameworks also makes it very useful for students thinking of studying speech therapy.
