Course Overview

Ready to explore the fundamental principles that govern the universe? This A Level Physics course will help you develop the skills and knowledge you need to understand everything from the smallest particles to the vastness of space. You'll be challenged, inspired, and prepared for an exciting future in a wide range of fields.

What You'll Learn
You will follow the WJEC A Level Physics syllabus, diving into both theory and practical applications. The course is broken down into units, with the first two being studied in your first year and three more in the second year for the full A level qualification.

Year 1: AS Content
* Motion, Energy & Matter: You'll explore foundational concepts like kinematics, dynamics, and energy, and learn about how solids behave under stress. You'll also investigate stars using radiation and delve into the world of particles and nuclear structure.
* Electricity and Light: This unit covers the conduction of electricity, resistance, and DC circuits. You'll also study the nature and properties of waves, as well as refraction, photons, and lasers.

Year 2: A2 Content
* Oscillations and Nuclei: This unit will take you further into topics such as circular motion, vibrations, kinetic theory, and thermal physics. You'll also learn about nuclear decay and nuclear energy.
* Fields and Options: You'll gain a deeper understanding of capacitance, electrostatic and gravitational fields, and magnetic fields. You'll also study orbits and the wider universe, as well as electromagnetic induction. To broaden your horizons, you'll choose one optional topic from a list that includes Alternating Currents, Medical Physics, The Physics of Sports, and Energy & the environment, depending on resource availability.
* Practical Physics: You'll build a strong portfolio of laboratory work, undertaking a wide range of practical exercises that support your theory units. This will prepare you for a dedicated practical assessment
5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including English Language / Welsh (1st Language) and meet the following criteria:

– GCSE Maths at grade B/6 or above on higher tier
– GCSE Science at grade B/6 or above on higher tier in the science you wish to study

At Coleg Cambria we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your exams. The better your grades the more options you will have, and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher level course.
Units 1 and 2 are both assessed through a 1½ hour written paper with questions which will relate to practical experience. Both units will contribute equally to the AS qualification and combined will form 40% of the full A level qualification.

Units 3 and 4 are both assessed through written papers. Unit 3 paper is 2.25 hours which includes a comprehension question. Unit 4 is examined through a paper lasting 2 hours.

In the papers for Units 1-4 there will be questions based on specified practical work undertaken throughout the course.

Unit 5 is the assessment of practical work through two tests which are marked externally by the WJEC: – an Experimental Task lasting 1.5 hours and a Data Analysis Task lasting 1 hour. Both of these are set in the spring term of the A2 year.

There will be internal mock examinations on published dates to provide realistic experience of examination conditions and practice.
A Level Physics is a highly respected qualification that can open doors to a huge variety of jobs. Physicists are known for being versatile problem-solvers with a broad and adaptable skill set.

This qualification is an essential requirement for many university courses, including all forms of Engineering, and for undergraduate apprenticeship courses like those offered by local employers such as Airbus.
