This course is designed to deepen your understanding of Philosophy, Ethics, and Religious beliefs, with a focus on one of the major world religions. You’ll develop valuable academic and communication skills that are highly sought after in university and the professional world.
Year 1: Laying the Foundations
In your first year, you'll dive into:
* An Introduction to Religion: Explore key religious figures, sacred texts, core concepts, and religious practices of one of the six major world religions (Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism or Sikhism).
* An Introduction to Philosophy of Religion: Grapple with arguments for the existence of God, the challenging nature of the problem of evil, and the nature and significance of religious experience.
* Religion and Ethics: Examine ethical thought and theories, applying them to contemporary issues such as abortion, animal experimentation, and homosexual relationships.
Year 2: Deepening Your Understanding
Your second year will build on these foundations, allowing you to:
* A Depth Study of Religion: Further explore one of the six major world religions examining religious figures and sacred texts, and examine significant historical and social developments that have shaped religious thought and identity, such as the influence of secularism and feminism.
* Advance Your Ethical Understanding: Investigate ethical language and thought, delve into the development of theories like Proportionalism, and discuss contemporary ethical debates, including free will versus determinism.
* Advance Your Philosophical Awareness: Engage with modern challenges to religious belief, such as New Atheism and psychological explanations for religion. You'll also further develop your understanding of religious experience and explore complexities in religious language.

Internal assessment includes research, regular tests/quizzes and exam based questions, with mock exams being a key feature.
External assessment is exam based (no coursework), with AS exams in May of the first year, and A2 exams in June of the second year. The exams use formal structured essays requiring knowledge (A01) and analysis (A02) of the material covered.
