Course Overview

This level is ideal if you're just starting out in animal care. You want to show you have the basic skills and knowledge you need to work in a supervised role. You may also be looking for a qualification to prepare you for further training or for progression to Level 2 qualifications.

For the award, certificate and diploma, you must complete a range of mandatory and optional units. Examples of units may include:

*Assist with the care of animals and principles of the care of animals
*Principles of dealing with feedstuffs for small animals and assist with feedstuffs for small animals
*Assist with animal accommodation
*Maintain the safety of self and others in the workplace
*Assist with maintaining structures and surfaces and principles of maintaining structures and surfaces
*Provide controlled exercise opportunities for animals
Suitable learners of all ages are invited to join anytime of the year. There are no minimum requirements, but a job scope assessment and initial assessments will be carried out to ensure that the correct course is chosen.
Assessment in the work area takes place throughout the programme, along with written and/or oral questioning, used to assess competence and underpinning knowledge. Your College Assessor will visit the workplace which must comply with working in a safe environment. Online support is available through a virtual learning environment.
Accreditation of prior learning is also considered, but this can be time bound.
Achieving one of these qualifications could help you work in roles such as:

Animal technician/assistant
Animal centre/shelter worker
Kennel or cattery worker
Pet shop assistant

Successful candidates may consider progression to the level 2 Award/Certificate/Diploma in Work-based Animal Care
