Course Overview
This course has been designed for learners aged 19 years and over.

The end qualification will be either:
VTCT NVQ level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing
or
VTCT NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy and Nails

The course will run over 3 days per week.

The common units from both of the courses will be run together and then learners will split off into sessions for each of the specific pathways.

Information for the NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing:
This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for Hairdressing and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a Junior Hairdresser/Hairstylist.

Learners must achieve all mandatory units which include:

● Style and Dress Hair
● Colour and Lighten
● Consultation
● Shampoo and Condition Hair

Learners will be completing regular work experience sessions at the commercial salon at Yale, Salon Ial, whilst studying their qualifications. Developing employability skills is a fundamental aspect of this course.

Information for NVQ level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy and Nails:
This course is a job-ready qualification based on National Occupational Standards (NOS).

This qualification will provide you with the requisite knowledge, understanding and skills to work competently as a Beauty and Nails Therapist.
Throughout this qualification, you will ensure responsibility to reduce risks to health and safety, promote additional services or products to clients, develop and maintain your effectiveness at work, provide facial skincare treatment, enhance the appearance of eyebrows and lashes, carry out waxing services and provide pedicure and manicure services and gel nails.

The qualification consists of theory sessions and exams.

An example of some of the topics you will study are; anatomy and physiology, health and safety and selling of products and services.

Therefore, there is an expectation that learners will work in their own time in addition to timetabled sessions in college, to complete the work set as home study.

In parallel, learners will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers.

Learners will be completing regular work experience sessions in our state-of-the-art Beauty salon and Spa whilst studying their qualifications. Developing Employability skills is a fundamental aspect of this course

In addition, the learning area programme consists of the following compulsory elements to the course:

● Essential Skills Wales training and assessments
● Development of Welsh language skills
● All learners must complete a work placement

Please note that your timetable may include some evening sessions. Dates will be provided by your tutor on Induction.

Please note that a kit and uniform are required to be able to study this course.
Coursework is by continuous assessment through practical observation, assignments and exams.
Successful completion of the Hairdressing / Beauty Level 1 learning area programme or 4 GCSEs at grade D/3 or above including Maths and English Language/Welsh (1st Language).

Applicants should be 19+ to study this course

Learners that have successfully completed a level 2 qualification in a different vocational area will also be considered.

At Coleg Cambria we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your exams. The better your grades the more options you will have, and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher level course.
On successful completion of this course, learners are able to progress to the Level 3 Hairdressing or Level 3 Beauty Therapy course or a Modern Apprenticeship in Hairdressing.
