Duration	Part Time, 2 years – part time, day release Students on this course will be required to undertake periods of self study, additional to taught hours. This programme will be delivered through a combination of online and face to face sessions to suit your individual needs, subject to us being able to work within the Welsh Government guidance and legislation to ensure the safety of you and our staff. We will also continue to support those with additional learning needs remotely. Please note that where work placements are not able to be fulfilled for safety reasons we will adapt modules to include work related projects in a way that will still develop your work based skills.

Course Overview

The HNC in Construction and the Built Environment (Civil Engineering) is offered at Cambria through a collaborative agreement with Pearson. The programme comprises of two years
part-time, day-release study and requires the completion of ten vocationally-specific modules.

The aim of the programme is to prepare students for a range of higher technical, professional and managerial careers in civil engineering by providing specialised studies which are relevant to
those vocations and professions within which students are employed or are seeking employment.

The programme has been structured so that students are able to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in their working life.

Teaching is by formal lectures, supported by laboratory work, materials testing, surveying fieldwork, field trips, site visits, drawing and design work.

Unit 1 - Individual Project
Unit 2 - Construction Technology
Unit 3 - Science and Materials
Unit 4 - Construction Practice and Management
Unit 6 - Construction Information (Drawing, Detailing, Specification)
Unit 7 - Surveying, Measuring and Setting Out
Unit 8 - Mathematics for Construction
Unit 20 - Principles of Structural Design

Assessment

Assessment is undertaken through written submission, time-controlled examination and practical activities.

Entry

For learners who have recently been in education, one of the following:

● Level 3 qualification (minimum 120 credits / 720 GLH) in construction/civil or a related subject area with a Merit profile (MPP) – minimum of 64 UCAS Tariff points
●A Level grades of DDE – minimum of 64 UCAS Tariff points
●International equivalent of the above

For learners who have not recently been in education, applications will be considered on a case by case basis, but may include one of the following:

●Access to Higher Education Certificate awarded by an approved further education institution in a relevant area
●Related work experience ( 3-5 years in a supervisory role)

Applicants should typically have A* to C grade and/or 9 to 4 in GCSE English / Welsh and maths / numeracy.

Part Time – £2500 per year
