Course Overview
This BA degree in Childhood studies is delivered by Coleg Cambria, in partnership with Aberystwyth University. Throughout the 3-year degree, you will explore a diverse range of areas that are pivotal to children’s lives and be equipped with the skills and expertise necessary to work in a range of child-related professions. The course will provide you with a solid foundation of knowledge and understanding, along with critical and evaluative skills that employers are looking for.

This programme is delivered on one full day of face-to-face teaching per week (delivery day TBC).

In the first two years of study, there are opportunities to undertake placements in a childcare or education setting. This time in settings offers practical experiences of learning and care environments in addition to observing and interacting with children. This practical element is an important element of the course, allowing you to link theory with practice and enhance your professional skills.

In the third year of study, learners will undertake a small-scale research project (dissertation), learning valuable skills in research, project design, and critical interpretation of sources. A member of staff supervises this project.

Themes covered in Year 1 include:

Educational policies
Child development
Study skills
The benefits and theory of play

The development of language
Theories of teaching and learning

The course material will be delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, interactive tutorials, visiting speakers, and workshops. Audio recordings of lectures are made so you can listen again in your own time.

A variety of assessment techniques will allow you to play to your strengths. Assessments may include examinations, essays, projects, bibliographic exercises, evaluation of resources, posters, and presentations. Examinations do not account for more than 50% of the marks in any modules. Written assignments are marked electronically and you will be given feedback and pointers for improvement for every assignment and examination. Student support is available throughout your studies.

In the third year, your dissertation will allow you to conduct your own research project on a topic of your own choice, under the guidance of a member of staff. It will require library-based study, a critical interpretation of sources, and a small-scale empirical investigation.
