Course Overview
During your time in Fabrication & Welding you will learn all about Performing Engineering Operations in how to work safely in a working environment, using equipment such as sheet metal cutting machines, MIG & MAG welding equipment and many other industry approved tools to develop your practical skills.

You will complete Theory units that look deeper into all the processes for working within the Engineering industry. We will support your development within Literacy and Numeracy Skills to support working within Engineering and also give you opportunities to develop your skills ready for the world of work with interview skills, meeting employers and preparing for apprenticeships.

As part of the course you will achieve 2 main qualifications (see below)
City and Guilds 2850-10: Theory
Certificate in Engineering
Unit 101: Working in Engineering
Unit 108: Working with Sheet Metals
Unit 110: Carrying out MIG Processes
City and Guilds 7682 NVQ Certificate in Performing Engineering Operations: Practical (Example Units)
Unit 201: Working Safely in an Engineering Environment
Unit 102: Carrying out Engineering Activities Efficiently and Effectively
Unit 103: Using and Communication Engineering Information
Unit 112: Carrying out Sheet Metal Cutting Forming and Assembly Activities
Unit 117: Using Semi-Automatic MIG or MAG Welding Equipment
The course requires continual assessment of College based assignments which will be collated as portfolio evidence to meet the needs of the Awarding Body.

Additionally City and Guilds and externally set and marked examinations will be scheduled at key stages throughout the course.
4 GCSEs at grade E/2 or above including Maths, English/Welsh (1st Language) or successful completion of an equivalent qualification.

For all learners who are looking to progress onto this L1 course from Foundation Skills or Entry – you must have achieved your main qualification, progressed in Maths and English and hit all of the targets in your ILP.

At Coleg Cambria we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your exams. The better your grades the more options you will have, and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher level course.
An increasing number of employers in the Fabrication and Welding industry now see the acquisition of relevant National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs), Essential Skills, City and Guilds certificates as an essential feature of their skills training programmes.

Opportunities may exist to gain trainee employment in any of the following trade disciplines:
– Sheet Metal Fabrication
– Welding
– Pipefitting
– Steelwork Construction

Following a successful first year of study, progression to the level 2 Programme in Fabrication and Welding or as an employed Foundation Apprentice.

Learners who gain employment may also, depending on conditions offered by their employers, have the opportunity to progress to Level 3 in Fabrication and Welding in the future.
