Course Overview
The Level 3 Diploma can be taken as a one year Diploma or as a full two year Extended Diploma. Level 3 Art and Design has been designed to provide you with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to progress to Degree Level study in Art and Design, or into employment. It provides an opportunity for those who have an interest in the visual arts to explore, develop and test their creativity within a qualification structure which is stimulating and demanding and provides a supportive transition from further to Higher Education.
Diploma and Extended Diploma in Art and Design are characterised by experiential, experimental and integrated learning. Both qualifications focus on the application of practical skills and acknowledge the common principles and distinctive characteristics of different Art and Design disciplines.
You will develop practical skills, theoretical understanding and, through a process of reiteration and reinforcement, develop effective working practices that will provide support for creativity across a range of stimulating and increasingly demanding activities. You will develop skills through a range of activities to enable you to achieve. You will experience working in both 2D and 3D, such as drawing from observation, painting, textiles, CAD, photography, printmaking and ceramics. There will be opportunities to work with practising artists, designers and craftspeople. You will participate in cultural and contextual activities and educational visits to support your studies.
Your learning programme is made up of a number of qualifications including the Welsh Baccalaureate. Coleg Cambria is committed to supporting your progression to employment or Higher Education. Therefore, all courses at Coleg Cambria provide the opportunity for the development of English and Maths to Level 2 and ideally to GCSE Grade C if you haven't already achieved this at school/college. This will enhance your prospects in the jobs market and will also enable progression to Higher Education.
Students who successfully complete this course will gain the UAL Level 3 Diploma in Art & Design

Unit 8 Developing an Art and Design project, allows you to demonstrate all the learning that has taken place through completion of the other units. This unit is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction and determines the overall qualification grade and is internally and externally assessed.
In order to achieve the Extended Diploma qualification (year 2), you must successfully pass 13 units including units 1–9 of the Diploma and in addition Units 10–13. Unit 13, which is the final major project proposal and realisation in Art and Design, allows you to demonstrate all the learning that has taken place through completion of the other units. 5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including English Language/Welsh (1st Language) and a grade B/6 or above in Art & Design, or for progression learners the successful completion of L2 Diploma in Art & Design qualification.
All applicants will also undertake an entrance project, which they must complete and pass.

Level 3 Diplomas are valued by employers and in Higher Education. This course prepares you for employment in the Creative Industries, and application to university onto courses such as Ceramics, Textiles, Fine Art, Graphics, Illustration, Product Design, Fashion, Film, Photography or Game and Web Design.
