Course Overview
The course is designed for site supervisors (or trainee supervisors) who are required to oversee ‘setting out’ for construction and civil engineering work. The course covers the operation of automatic optical levels, single and dual grade laser levels, cross line laser levels and pipe line levels. Developing the candidates’ knowledge and practical ability in basic surveying procedures and methods, including the mathematical principles of calculating a survey. Making candidates aware of the most recent developments in surveying technology.
● Ensuring accuracy in setting out and levelling activities.
● Setting out, horizontal control
● Setting out, vertical control
● Establish working datums (TBMs) on site
● Read the staff, book and calculate the results
● Record the level of existing feature
● Set out from working drawings
● Check for accuracy in setting out activities
● Set out to given levels
● Set out profiles and calculate travellers
● Set up and use automatic optical levels
● Set up and use digital levels
● Set up and use single and dual grade laser levels
● Set up and use pipe levels
● Calculate areas angles, areas and volumes
● Check setting out and record results.

To minimise setting out discrepancies, increase awareness in leading ‘state-of-art’ digital equipment and remove/ reduce the associated increased cost in rectification of any inaccurate setting out and levelling by operatives under supervision.
No formal assessment, ongoing formative assessment of practical skills and a short test to assess knowledge gained. Everyone completing the course will receive a Coleg Cambria achievement certificate.
Site supervisors preferably with previous experience of basic setting out and understanding of the need to work and transfer levels is desirable.
