Campus Council Reps

Your Voice, Your Union!

Campus Council Reps

Campus Council Reps:

Our Campus Councils are made up of:

  • Approx. 12 x Campus Council Reps per campus;
  • This includes 1 x Campus Council Vice-Chair elected during the first meeting;
  • The Student Vice-President in the role of the meeting Chair;
  • Senior Management; and
  • The Student Voice Engagement Officer.

Campus Council Meetings:

Our Campus Council Meetings are scheduled once per term and our members are invited to submit papers on a range of topics. A common description used for these meetings is “We do not discuss the price of chips” – this is to say that these meetings are for the more in-depth discussion of what Student Voice is about at its core. Ideally, these meetings are for discussing academic-related issues the students have, however, some estates or facilities-related issues do come up for discussion also.

Our meetings are held in a typical board meeting style with a full agenda and chaired by the Student Vice-President for that campus.

How We Elect Our Campus Council Reps:

Once our Student Reps have been put into position, they are then invited to submit applications for one of approx. 12 positions on the Campus Council for their campus.

The application process: Reps submit an application form containing a statement explaining why they should be chosen to represent their subject area as a Campus Council Rep. The application forms go through an initial screening process with applicants being invited to a brief interview, then shortlisted candidates are chosen by way of election.

TIP: Make good use of your statement, especially on the larger campuses as we can only usually accept one applicant per subject area.

NOTE: Applications are reviewed into subject areas and then reviewed against the arguments made in their accompanying statements and, where necessary, against the student record.

Campus Council Vice-Chairs:

During our first Campus Council meeting each academic year, our Student Vice-President in the position of the Chair of the meeting requests that anyone wanting to put themselves forward for the position of Vice-Chair makes themselves known at the beginning of the meeting. They each make a brief statement on why they should be the Vice-Chair before being asked to leave the room while all remaining members are asked to vote on who they wish to be the Vice-Chair.

This method is the same as used in many board-style meetings and helps to prepare our students for this scenario going forward.
