Course Overview
The UAL Level 4 Professional Diploma in Performance has been designed to provide students with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to progress into higher education or conservatoire training and may also support students intending to progress directly into employment in the performance industries.

Focusing on your skills as a Professional Actor in training, this course will support your development through a rigorous and sustained exploration of a range of performance methodologies and practice. In an increasingly competitive industry, this course will give you the opportunity to develop a greater range of acting skills and a deeper understanding of the theoretical background to effective and exciting performance.

The central focus of the course will be on developing your skills when working with dramatic text. You will consider a range of plays from different periods of theatre history and a range of dramatic styles. Your understanding of these plays will be supported and informed by practical and theoretical exploration of the ideas of a range of practitioners.

Teaching will consist of a mix of lecturer-led practical and theoretical sessions in acting, voice and movement, learner-led research and project work, masterclasses from visiting industry professionals, theatre visits and supporting pastoral and tutorial care.

Throughout, staff will focus on the development of a fully professional attitude by maintaining high levels of expectation and modelling such behaviour themselves.

The ideas and techniques that you will explore in Stages 1 & 2 (Units 1 & 2) will inform your work on a full-length public production of a selected text in Stage 3 (Unit 3). This performance will take place in our new purpose-built studio theatre.
Assessment methods vary depending on the different projects you will take throughout the year – many practical performance assessments concentrate on the student’s engagement with the work at a particular point in time. In addition, tutors will provide a continuous assessment mark based on the learner’s contribution and professionalism to the process that led to the assessment.

Forms of assessment may include theatre and studio presentations, practical assignments with supporting written documentation, showings of work in progress, and final performances. Assessments are viewed as an integral part of the learning process and for each assessed course there is supervision, feedback and support available.

Assessment and grading:
● Units 1 & 2 are assessed by teaching staff and graded pass/fail only.
● Students will need to achieve pass grades for both units to continue on to Unit 3.
● Unit 3 is assessed by teaching staff and externally moderated by UAL. This unit is graded fail/pass/merit/distinction and provides the student with their overall qualification grade.
• Merit at UAL Level 3 (Extended Diploma in Performing and Production Arts) or A level equivalent (3 A levels at C or above – including Theatre Studies)
