Course Overview
This course provides you with an overview of the veterinary care industry and will develop your practical competence, knowledge, experience, customer services and retail skills which are necessary in order to gain employment in the industry. You will be involved in helping to care for the wide range of animal species at the college.
The subjects you will study include animal handling and care in the veterinary environment, assisting with care in the veterinary environment and administrative duties in the veterinary care environment.
The excellent Animal Care Centre will give you the opportunity to gain valuable practical skills, with access to over a hundred species of animals including rabbits, pigs, snakes, lizards and rodents. You will also cover a wide range of underpinning knowledge and this combination will give you a head start in your chosen career path. Learning will be as fun as possible and you will learn through a variety of methods, including lectures, individual and group work, up to 1 day per week of practical work, and will use a range of modern learning technology.
English and Maths are an integral part of the programme and we will work with you to improve your literacy and numeracy skills, as well as provide an opportunity to re-sit English and Maths GCSEs.

The course is assessed through exams, written assignments, practical assessments, witness testimonies and case studies. Throughout the programme you will take part in a range of mock examinations and assessments, as well as informal practise assessments to help you with learning the course content effectively.
You will also be required to gain real experience of a veterinary care environment in a registered veterinary practice and carry out a minimum of 1 day per week work experience. It is essential that you are proactive in finding a work placement, and that this is secured before the start of the course.

4 GCSEs at grade D/3 or above including English/Welsh (1st Language) and Maths/Numeracy or Science
or
Level 1 Diploma in Animal Care or passed Level 2 Technical Certificate in Animal Care.
You must have secured a work experience placement in a veterinary practice for 1 day per week for the duration of the course and complete 1 weeks placement prior to commencing the course in September.

Progression to the Level 3 Apprenticeship in Veterinary Nursing, Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management, or Level 2 Work Based Apprenticeship in Animal Care, subject to meeting criteria.
If you wish to progress onto a Level 3 Veterinary Nursing qualification and register as a trainee Veterinary Nurse, you will need to meet the RCVS criteria.
Learners wishing to go into employment may find work in veterinary practices, second opinion or referral veterinary practices, veterinary hospitals, zoos, animal rescue centres and a variety of other animal care disciplines.
If you wish to progress onto a Level 3 Veterinary Nursing qualification and register as a trainee Veterinary Nurse, you will need to meet the RCVS criteria.
Learners wishing to go into employment may find work in veterinary practices, second opinion or referral veterinary practices, veterinary hospitals, zoos, animal rescue centres and a variety of other animal care disciplines.
