Course Overview
The course will give you an exciting introduction to working in the outdoors. A lot of time will be spent working out in nature in varying weather and landscape conditions with lots of hands-on experience enhanced with classroom sessions within our vast college grounds and with different outdoor organisations within North Wales, preparing you for further training or a career in an outdoor setting.

The subjects studied include;
● Health and Safety for Environmental Studies
● Practical Skills for Woodland Areas
● Practical Skills for the Outdoors
● Carrying out a River Survey - Wildlife and vegetation
● Team Working
● Observing Wildlife and Fauna
● Identifying local species and biodiversity
● Construct items from outdoor materials.
● Looking after and creating habitats for wildlife

We also offer;
- Numerous educational visits throughout the year to safari parks and zoos.
- Access to guest speakers and industry specialists.
- Full use of the commercial farm on site.

Who is the course aimed at?
● Learners that have previously completed animal care and horticulture courses that are now looking for industry skills and a career in wildlife and conservation.

Where will I study?
● You will be based at Llysfasi in our newly renovated Animal Management Centre. Llysfasi is located in the breathtaking North East Wales countryside of Ruthin, which is within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

● Llysfasi's Animal Care Centre houses over 200 animals from a wide range of exciting species of invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians, fish, birds and mammals including meerkats. In addition, the centre is home to livestock such as our alpacas, Guernsey goats and poultry units. You will also have regular access to our 970 acre estate, where you will learn about habitat management and surveying skills.
How will I gain the qualification?

● You will be assessed in many different ways which are designed to stretch and encourage your development:
○ Practical activities working and completing a range of tasks outdoors in nature.
○ Short knowledge questions
● You will also work towards improving Literacy and Numeracy.
● There are no exams on this course.
4 GCSEs at grade E/2 or above including English Language/Welsh (1st Language), or successful completion of a relevant Entry Level qualification.

At Coleg Cambria we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your exams. The better your grades the more options you will have, and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher level course.

● Level 2 Forestry or Level 2 in Land and Wildlife
● Level 2 Work Based Learning in Animal Care or Horticulture
