Course Overview
If you’re looking for a starting point for a career working in the countryside, covering the management of land, habitats, wildlife, and conservation, this course is for you. This course provides a sound base to progress into either a more specialist level 3 qualification, such as countryside management or forestry and arboriculture, or to go into employment, alternatively it could lead to a work based apprenticeship.

The course covers safe working in the countryside, work experience, machine operation and tractor driving, conservation and improvements to British habitats, species surveying and monitoring, countryside business, estate skills, and practical forestry skills.

You will be taught in a variety of ways, and benefit from practical hands-on sessions, classroom activities, visits and guest speakers, whilst making full use of the college’s extensive estate, including the 970 acre (400 hectare) farm and woodlands. You will spend 150 hours in a work experience placement as part of the course.

Educational trips are an important part of the course, and strong links with businesses and organisations in the countryside, provide further learning opportunities in the form of visits and practical sessions.

English and maths GCSE resits will also be offered to those who did not achieve grade C/4 or above.
Each of the units of the qualification are assessed by a range of assignments, which assess both practical skills, knowledge and understanding, as appropriate to the unit.

All assignments must be passed to pass the units, and all units must be passed to gain the qualification. Assessment is ongoing throughout the course, with set deadlines for individual tasks. Grades awarded for each assignment, contribute to the overall qualification grade.

Successful completion of the course and all assessments will lead to a City and Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Countryside and Environment.
4 GSCEs at grade D/3 or above including English/Welsh (1st Language), Maths, and Science, or a Distinction grade in a relevant Level 1 qualification.

A relevant Level 1 qualification at distinction grade (depending on the size of qualification), will also count towards entry, in addition to English/Welsh and Maths at D/3 grade which are still required.

At Coleg Cambria we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your exams. The better your grades the more options you will have, and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher level course.
Progression to a Level 3 Tilhill Extended Diploma in Forestry and Arboriculture (2 years) or Extended Diploma in Countryside Management.

Distinction grades are required to progress to level 3 courses.

Job opportunities are diverse including working as an assistant conservation worker, trainee under keeper, assistant recreation ranger, maintenance / machinery operative, ground worker for a tree surgeon or a fencing contractor. There are also opportunities for apprenticeships.
Some courses may require equipment and/or uniforms to be purchased. Please see attached equipment list for further information.
