Course Overview
A level Government and Politics is an exciting, dynamic new subject to study giving you the opportunity to discuss a range of issues and develop valuable academic skills. A level Politics is a prestigious A Level welcomed by universities and enables progression to a wide choice of future courses and careers.
AS and A2 Politics follows the WJEC specification.
AS Level Year 1
The main areas of study will be Government in Wales and the United Kingdom and Participating in a Democracy. Key questions to be considered are concerned with the constitution, the government and the devolved powers: sovereignty, power and accountability – where does power lie in the British Political system? Who and how are those in power held accountable? What does citizenship mean in the UK? What are the rights of our citizens and how can we influence and affect political processes? How can we engage in political activity? How do political parties operate?

A2 Level Year 2
The A2 year involves a study of political concepts and theories examining a range of ideologies -Socialism, Nationalism, Conservatism, Liberalism and a further unit on the Government and Politics of the USA, again questioning power, democracy and participation in the political system.

Extra-Curricular Activities
All students have the opportunity to develop their interests and prepare themselves for both university and careers. Activities will include trips such as to conferences and London (Parliament) or the Welsh Assembly in Cardiff; interactive discussions; visiting speakers and a chance to question a range of guest speakers including MPs and MSs
The AS and A2 are both assessed by end of year exams, in the first and second year. There is no coursework however the department uses important mock exams as a means of preparing students for external assessment and regular exam style questions are set.
5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above.
Grade B/6 in English Language/Welsh (1st Language) preferred.
No previous experience necessary.

Should an A level applicant have or be predicted a grade D/3 in either GCSE Maths or English (and at least a grade C/4 in the other subject) then your application will be considered.

At Coleg Cambria we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your exams. The better your grades the more options you will have, and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher level course.
The skills obtained are extremely valuable in a number of careers. Employers look favourably on Politics students as they tend to have strong analytical skills. Relevant careers include:
