Course Overview
Many students choose Geography because of the scope it provides for studying a wide range of current themes and issues, the important insights it offers for understanding our contemporary worlds, and the opportunity to put this knowledge into practice through fieldwork. Geography is seen as a “facilitating subject” for entry to university and has a level of difficulty associated with this. The course builds on GCSE Geography topics and incorporates skills in essay writing, data analysis, map interpretation, information technology, fieldwork and personal research. Our aim is to provide students with the highest quality education and to equip students with a wide range of skills to prepare them for a rewarding and successful career. We seek to provide these within a stimulating, supportive, and friendly department

Compulsory field visits support and underpin all topics as a requirement for the coursework required by the new specification. Students will be required to plan, data collect, analyse and evaluate data they collect in an independent manner.
A variety of assessment methods are used throughout the year, with internal mock examinations in both the AS and A2 years. External examinations are held at the end of the AS course in May/June.

This is worth 40% of the total A Level. The second year of the course (A2) is worth 60%. There is a coursework element that is worth 20% of the total qualification.
5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including Geography or Humanities or Environmental Science or Maths or Maths Numeracy (Intermediate or Higher Tier).
Geography GCSE at grade B/6 or above desirable.
A grade C/4 in a Science desirable.

Should an A level applicant have or be predicted a grade D/3 in either GCSE Maths or English (and at least a grade C/4 in the other subject) then your application will be considered.

At Coleg Cambria we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your exams. The better your grades the more options you will have, and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher level course.
A Level Geography is classed as a “facilitating subject” which means it is accepted as a recognised academic qualification for entrance to all Higher Education institutions, including Russell Group universities. Employers highly value candidates with Geography qualifications, owing to the versatile range of skills they bring.
