Course Overview
This is the broadest of all the A level Art and Design specialism and covers a wide variety of media and techniques.
The AS/A2 is a challenging, rewarding and exciting coursework programme with no exams that offers a valuable experience for you if you have a keen interest Art and Design.
As a general course this allows you to keep your options open for the future and provides a good educational grounding for all careers. It will broaden your life-long transferable skills that are sought by employers and universities. Skills such as creativity, problem solving, independent learning, organisation and communications skills, whilst encouraging your creative potential.
All students participate in practical and theoretical workshops and are encouraged to experiment with a range of media and develop skills through a variety of activities and specialisms including photography, textiles, fashion, fine art, drawing, painting, 3D, graphics and printmaking. Practical work is underpinned by critical analysis of appropriate sources and research.
You will have the opportunity to explore processes using specialist equipped art & design studios to produce a personal portfolio of work. If you wish to specialise after the skills building part of the course you can on personal projects, developing your own work in any direction with the support of skilled teaching staff.
There are lots of opportunities to learn new skills students complete assignment based projects which develop thinking and communication skills and the ability to solve problems. You can expect to work with traditional art materials and the latest digital media using industry standard iMac computers and Adobe software.
There will be opportunities to work with artists, designers and craftspeople. You will participate in cultural and contextual activities and educational visits to support your studies and in external exhibitions and creative industry competitions.

Unit 1 – Personal Creative Enquiry, an internally assessed and externally moderated. This is an extended, exploratory project/portfolio based on themes and subjects that are personal and meaningful to you.
At A2 level, there is one non-exam assessment unit 2 and one exam unit 3.
Unit 2 – Personal Investigation, a major in-depth critical, practical and
theoretical investigative project/portfolio and an extended written element of
1000 words minimum.
Unit 3 – Externally Set Assignment set by the awarding body.
All units are internally assessed and externally moderated.

5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including English Language/Welsh (1st Language) and a grade C/4 or above in any Art & Design endorsement (such as Fine Art, Graphic Communication, Textile Design, Three-Dimensional Design or Photography).
Plus successful completion of the Summer Entrance Project we set each year in July.
*Students cannot take more than 1 Art and Design endorsement, i.e. students can take either Art, Craft and Design or Photography / Digital Imaging.
Should an A level applicant have or be predicted a grade D/3 in either GCSE Maths or English (and at least a grade C/4 in the other subject) then your application will be considered.
At Coleg Cambria we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your exams. The better your grades the more options you will have, and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher level course.

You may wish to progress onto a L3/4 Foundation Diploma in Art & Design (pre –degree)
