Course Overview
The AS may be taken as a discrete one-year qualification or as the first half of a full two year A Level. This course is challenging, rewarding and enjoyable and offers a valuable experience for learners with a keen interest and aptitude in music.

The course enables you to develop musical skills through a variety of activities. Your coursework will consist of studies such as composition, appraisal, ensemble and/or solo performance.

Set works are from the Western Classical Tradition as well as 20th/21st century popular music. Ideally, you will be having instrumental or vocal lessons to improve your performance skills. You will participate in concerts, cultural and contextual activities and educational visits to support your studies.

5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above.
Music (A*/9 – B/6 grade preferred) or Grade 5 Theory.
Grade 4 practical or higher pass required in at least one instrument or approval from Course Team.

Where a student does not have paper qualifications they must meet Tim Jones (Yale)/Tim Heeley (Deeside) to discuss. We are aware that some students will not have had the opportunity to complete GCSE Music prior to commencing their A levels. Students need to arrange to receive individual instrumental/vocal tuition as performance is an essential element of the course.

Should an A level applicant have or be predicted a grade D/3 in either GCSE Maths or English (and at least a grade C/4 in the other subject) then your application will be considered.

At Coleg Cambria we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your exams. The better your grades the more options you will have, and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher level course.
You can continue your studies at university or gain employment in the Performing Arts Industries as a performer, administrator, composer, music therapist, music editor, orchestral manager, music librarian, publisher, session musician, critic, teacher, producer, accompanist etc.
Some courses may require equipment and/or uniforms to be purchased. Please see attached equipment list for further information.
