Course Overview
There is a strong emphasis on oral and listening skills in all lessons and there is ample opportunity to work in pairs, small groups, with the Spanish assistant and using the internet. Written skills are developed systematically throughout the course as is the ability to deal with both oral and written forms of the language in a variety of contexts.
There will be an oral assessment and one written exam for AS, including listening and reading tasks and an essay on a Spanish film.

Topics studied for AS include the family, youth trends, educational and employment opportunities, the culture of Spanish-speaking countries as well as their art, music, literature and film. We will study one film in depth.
Candidates who are successful in these modules may continue to A level by taking three further modules.

The department uses important mock exams as a means of preparing students for external assessment.
5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including Spanish.

Should an A level applicant have or be predicted a grade D/3 in either GCSE Maths or English (and at least a grade C/4 in the other subject) then your application will be considered.

At Coleg Cambria we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your exams. The better your grades the more options you will have, and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher level course.
Modern Foreign Languages such as Spanish are known as “facilitating A Levels”. That means that they are valued at all universities, including the top Russell Group of universities.

The importance of studying foreign languages is obvious, whatever your career aspirations may be. Languages combine well with any subject now that more Higher Education Institutions are offering greater possibilities to continue foreign language study. The study of a foreign language requires imagination, self-discipline and the ability to communicate.

These are highly desirable qualities for prospective employers and language students are being employed in an increasing number of careers, in particular business. This is especially so with Spanish given its growing global importance.
Some courses may require equipment and/or uniforms to be purchased. Please see attached equipment list for further information.
