Are you ready to grow a successful career in forestry? The Tilhill Diploma in Forestry and Arboriculture is part of a unique partnership between Coleg Llysfasi and Tilhill Forestry, the UK's largest forest and woodland management company. This course is specifically designed to get you 'industry ready' and trained for employment in this vital sector.

What You'll Learn

In the modern, high-tech world of forestry, a deep understanding of trees is at the heart of everything we do, whether it's commercial forestry or woodland management.

We will guide you through the technical aspects of:
● Identifying different tree species.
● Understanding the science of how trees function.
● Establishing and tending trees, including protection from pests and diseases.
● Managing trees for production, conservation, and amenity.
● The entire process from felling and harvesting to timber processing.

You’ll also learn to operate the essential tools, equipment, and machinery for this exciting industry, including chainsaws, woodchippers, tractors, skidders, and forwarders.

Hands-On Experience & Industry Connections

Throughout the course, you’ll work towards industry standards, developing practical skills and theoretical understanding. There's a significant emphasis on practical work, giving you plenty of opportunities to get hands-on with trees. Educational trips to Tilhill Forestry and BSW sites throughout the supply chain provide further learning on commercial sites, including visits, practical sessions, and on-site work experience. Our close industry links provide real-life work situations, coupled with a substantial work placement, ensuring you gain all the experience needed for a flying start in your first job.

Boost Your Qualifications

To complement your main course, you'll have the option to gain a range of additional qualifications (at cost) in areas such as:
● Chainsaws
● ATV quads
● Brushcutters
● Wood chippers
● Pesticide application
● Tractor driving

You'll also have the opportunity to work on community projects and other activities, including your own individual project, while working towards completing the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate.

5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including Maths and English Language/Welsh (1st Language)
OR Successful completion of a relevant Level 2 programme which must include achievement of numeracy and literacy.

At Coleg Cambria we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your exams. The better your grades the more options you will have, and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher level course.
You’ll demonstrate your learning throughout the qualification through a variety of assignments, designed to assess both your practical skills, knowledge, and understanding relevant to each unit.

To gain the qualification, you must successfully pass all assignments for each unit. Assessment is continuous throughout the course, with clear deadlines for individual tasks.

The grades you achieve for each assignment contribute to your overall qualification grade.

Upon successful completion of this qualification, you’ll open doors to exciting career and further study opportunities.

Progression Opportunities

Successful students who achieve high grades in this first stage of the Tilhill Diploma will be eligible to apply for the second stage: The Tilhill Foundation Degree in Forestry and Woodland Management at Coleg Llysfasi. If successful after an interview with Tilhill staff, you will receive mentoring, technical input, and support from Tilhill Forestry. This includes bespoke training and work placements as part of the course, ideally positioning you for future employment within the company.

Alternatively, completing this qualification could lead to a job or apprenticeship with forestry, arboriculture, or countryside companies and organisations.
