Course Overview
Foundation Art & Design is an iconic part of UK creative education. It is a creative rite of passage with a lineage stretching from the Bauhaus to the most technologically informed contemporary practices.

A Foundation course is the first significant step in the process of becoming an Artist or Designer. From developing a personal language to critically analysing the potential of your ideas, you will build a foundation on which to thrive in the world of Art & Design. You will be encouraged to explore, experiment and to take risks, all of which will extend your critical independence and enable you to demonstrate a full understanding of the relevant standards required to achieve progression to Higher Education. You will learn through projects, assignments, presentations, group critiques to develop strong communication skills, which will support the transition from general to specialist Art and Design education.

This highly stimulating course will prepare you for the demands of Degree Level education. You will explore a wide range of 2D and 3D processes in Art and Design such as drawing, fine art, textiles, fashion, graphics, CAD and photography, all designed to help you select a specialist area of study. In the final part of the course, you will be involved in proposing, planning, creating and exhibiting a final major project.

There will be opportunities to work with practising artists, designers and craftspeople. You will participate in cultural and contextual activities and educational visits to support your studies.

Your learning programme will be made up of a number of qualifications. These will include Essential and Wider Skills and the development of Literacy and Numeracy skills. Coleg Cambria is committed to supporting your progression to employment or Higher Education. Therefore, all courses at Coleg Cambria provide the opportunity for the development of English and Maths to Level 2 and ideally to GCSE Grade C if you haven't already achieved this at school/college. This will enhance your prospects in the jobs market and will also enable progression to Higher Education.
The Foundation Diploma is a Level 3 qualification with units 1-4 at Level 3 and units 5-6 at Level 4. All Units are Mandatory.

In order to achieve the Diploma you must successfully pass all 6 units. Units 5 & 6, planning, creating, presenting and reviewing a Major Project in Art and Design allows you to demonstrate all the learning that has taken place through completion of the other units. These units are graded Pass, Merit or Distinction and determines the overall qualification grade and is internally and externally assessed.
5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including English/Welsh (1st Language) and a grade B/6 or above in an Art & Design related subject.

The majority of students will possess A Levels (including one in an Art & Design related subject at C/4 or above) or an equivalent L3 Art & Design Diploma qualification.

All applicants will also undertake an entrance project, which they must complete and pass.

At Coleg Cambria we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your exams. The better your grades the more options you will have, and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher level course.
Level 3/4 Pre Degree Foundation Diploma Art & Design is highly valued by Higher Education institutions. You can progress onto many of the most prestigious universities in the UK, studying Art, Design and Creative Media courses such as Ceramics, Textiles, Fine Art, Graphics, Illustration, Product Design, Fashion, Film, Photography or Game and Web Design.
