Course Overview
Students who have taken either Welsh 1st Language or Welsh 1st Literature cannot take this course. We advise that you contact Ysgol Morgan Llwyd to study the Welsh First Language A level. You may be able to devise a programme of study where you study this course alongside your other A levels at Yale Sixth.
Dewch I astudio Cymraeg! Come and learn Welsh - This course is available to full-time learners who wish to study the AS and A level in Welsh as a Second Language. The Welsh Second Language AS and A Level specification is designed to encourage students to:
1. Study Welsh with interest, enjoyment and enthusiasm;
2. Communicate correctly and fluently both orally and in writing within a wide range of situations and contexts;
3. Write creatively and factually for a range of purposes;
4. Analyse familiar and unfamiliar texts independently;
5. Listen and respond to the opinions of others when expressing a point of view;
6. Express an independent opinion, based on knowledge and understanding of literary and factual texts;
7. Respond in Welsh with clarity, in a relevant, confident and structured manner;
8. Play an appropriate role in a bilingual society at the beginning of the twenty first century.
This course is ideal for candidates who have already completed the GCSE course in Welsh as a Second Language. The course is also suitable for candidates who have an interest in Welsh culture, particularly the study of film, poetry and Welsh history. The purpose of this specification is to develop candidates’ communication skills, in both written and spoken Welsh. It is intended to develop their ability to use language imaginatively. Broad reading is encouraged as well as thorough learning of specific literary works. The ability to respond to literature and contemporary multimedia cultural materials is promoted in order to gain an appreciation of Wales’s cultural heritage. The WJEC released a new course in 2016-2017 which will appeal to students who are looking to broaden their knowledge of really interesting aspects of Welsh history and culture, and who have an interest in contemporary Wales. Many of the texts on the course have been modernised to appeal to learners of the ages of 16+.
Please contact Carys at carys.roberts@cambria.ac.uk to see whether you are suitable for this course or if you would like any further information about the course content. The course is more suitable for learners who have achieved a C or above in the full course but students who have completed the short course are also able to study this subject and will be supported in doing so.

The first year of study:
There are three areas of study based on the core assessments of speaking, reading, listening and writing:
CA1: The study of a film called PATAGONIA and a speaking exam in a group of 2-3 people testing your study of the film. There is also a short assessment (individual) with the examiner about your chosen coursework topic.
CA2: COURSEWORK. This is designed to develop your skills in writing simply but effectively in the Welsh language. You will choose a topic that interests and inspires you. This topic must have a Welsh connection e.g. Castles, myths, history, culture.
CA3: A written exam based on GRAMMAR and POETRY. You will respond to three questions testing your study of grammar. You will also write about a poem selected out of five poems studied in class. These poems are enjoyable, current and will enable the student to learn new terms and improve their fluency through the study of literary texts in the Welsh language.
The second year of study:
There are three units of study in the second year:
CA4: The study of a contemporary Welsh drama called CRASH. Students will take part in a speaking exam in groups and will respond to questions testing their knowledge of the play. There will also be an individual examination based on the study of Welsh themes in the course. This is called SYNOPTIC.
CA5: A 2 hour written exam testing the following areas: The Welsh Language in Society and Translanguaging. This unit requires the study of Welsh history: political, social etc. This unit also involves the practice of the skill of translanguaging – not translation – but an interpretation of English material by responding through the Welsh language.
CA6: A 2 hour written exam based on a series of grammar tests and a section testing knowledge of and responses to four Welsh short stories including an essay comparing and contrasting themes across the Welsh course.
Skills: There is a strong emphasis on oral and listening skills in all lessons and there is ample opportunity to work in pairs and groups, with the Welsh assistant and independently. Written skills are developed systematically throughout the course as is the ability to deal with both oral and written forms of the language in a variety of contexts.

The importance of studying Welsh is obvious, whatever your career aspirations may be. Employers now state the desirability of a qualification in Welsh when applying for jobs. You may choose to study this subject for your own enjoyment but career opportunities are created from possessing a qualification in Welsh such as teaching, translating, interpreting and working with businesses that require communication in Welsh.
Languages combine well with any subject now that more Higher Education Institutions are offering greater possibilities to continue language study. A study of language requires imagination, self-discipline and the ability to communicate. These are highly desirable qualities for prospective employers.
