Course Overview
Variable speed drives (VSDs), also called Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) or Inverters, control the flow of energy from the mains supply to drive the world’s industrial motors. Nearly 70 percent of all industrial electrical energy use goes to powering electric motors. These motors are the workhorses of business, from pumps moving fluids to fans moving air to compressors, conveyors, and every type of machine that depends on rotational force to get its job done.
VSDs greatly improve the energy efficiency of various applications and offer: improved operational efficiency, reduced labour costs, electricity bill reduction, fast financial payback, reduced maintenance and spare part costs and longer equipment lifetimes.
This course introduces the learner to modern motor drives and culminates in learners carrying out practical tasks on typical industrial VSDs.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this course a learner will:
● Appreciate different motor starting methods.
● Understand the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods.
● Understand why motor drives are needed and the benefits of using them.
● Gain an appreciation of basic induction motor theory.
● Learn about drive technology and frequency control.
● Discuss how a frequency converter works.
● Understand Pulse Width Modulation and IGBT Technology.
● Be able to set and adjust common drive parameters.
