Course Overview
They allow the learner to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the horticulture sector. This qualification is designed primarily for learners who wish to enhance their high occupational skills and good knowledge in a wide range of horticultural skills to confirm occupational competence in specific job roles including:
● Deputy Head Greenkeeper
● Head Greenkeeper

You can progress through the different levels and onto relevant apprenticeships

It is ideal for learners who carry out routine workplace tasks and who may use this qualification as a stepping stone to higher qualifications of this type.
The qualification covers skills from a wide range of areas where mandatory units consists of the following:
maintain drainage systems; promote, monitor and maintain health, safety and security of the workplace; estimate and programme resource requirements; manage your own resources; set and mark out landscape sites to establish grassed and planted areas; evaluate ground and environmental conditions to establish grassed and planted areas; prepare sites for soft landscape establishment; establish grass swards; plan the maintenance, repair and renovation of sports turf areas; plan and set out sports areas; maintain irrigation systems; manage information for action.

Optional units may include selection from some of the following units:
Establish planted areas; design and install drainage systems; prepare for and maintain equipment and machines; plan and manage the control of pests, diseases and disorders; safe use and application of pesticides; encourage and motivate volunteers; manage the work of volunteers; prepare to undertake a report on a field survey; conduct and report on a field survey for people; conduct and report on a field survey for physical features; conduct and report on a field survey for animals; conduct and report on a field survey for habitat types; conduct and report on a field survey for plants; conduct and report on a field survey for access networks; time management for business; lead the work of teams and individuals to achieve their objectives; implement marketing plans; manage budgets.


Learners will choose combined units to meet their learning and development needs. This qualification is a Diploma requiring achievement of 41 credits from the mandatory units and a minimum of 6 credits from the optional units.
Open distance learning and work based assessment. Your College Assessor will visit the workplace which must comply with working in a safe environment. Assessments will take place to assess competence and underpinning knowledge.
On-line support is available through a virtual learning environment.
Learning takes the form of a mixture of observations in the workplace, written and oral questioning, job sheets, photographs, video and witness statements
Accreditation of prior learning is also considered, but this is time bound.
Suitable learners of all ages are invited to join anytime of the year. It is essential you are currently employed in this area of learning and fully supported by your employer.
All applicants will undertake a thorough training needs analysis to ensure that the correct course and levels are chosen.
The qualification is the first step in an Apprenticeship Framework but may be used as a stepping stone to larger qualifications of this type.

● Level 4 Diploma in Horticulture
