Early in October Niki Shuttleworth, the College’s Health, Safety and Sustainability Officer travelled to London and on behalf of Coleg Cambria was presented the Carbon Trust “Best In Waste Management” Award. The award was presented by the Deputy Mayor of London, Shirley Rodrigues in London’s City Hall during the UK Corporate Sustainability Summit.

Each year the Carbon Trust analyze the performance of all those organisations and companies throughout the UK who hold the Carbon Trust Standard. The Trust identifies the company or organisation which has performed the best in waste management. Although all aspects of waste management are considered the primary measure focuses on the amount of waste created by the company or organisation. Coleg Cambria’s performance was considered alongside a number of the UK’s largest organisations and blue chip companies: Heathrow Airport, Whitbread, Selfridges, The Brookers Group and The Scottish Government to list just a few.

A small team of technicians together with staff and students, designed and implemented a number of waste management strategies and initiatives across each of the college sites. Over the past three years these measures have reduced the waste created by the college by 179 tonnes; an amazing 21% reduction.

“We would like to congratulate Coleg Cambria for being the best individual performer this year amongst all organisations that hold the Carbon Trust Standard for Waste. The college has embraced the use of technology to make impressive strides in reducing its waste footprint, putting in place a strong approach to waste management that engages both staff and students.” Hugh Jones Managing Director of Business Services, The Carbon Trust

This prestigious award joins a number of other impressive awards gained by Coleg Cambria in recognition of its commitment to the environment and its drive towards a sustainable future. In recent months the College has been awarded the Carbon Trust Management Standards for Energy, Water and Waste Management. In addition to these Coleg Cambria has also been awarded the Green Dragon Environmental Management Standard for all college premises at Level 5, the highest level the scheme can award.

Rick Bedson the Head of Estates & Facilities for the College said “ the Best in Waste Management is a national award and is an incredible achievement. This together with the Carbon Trust Standards and the Green Dragon award recognises the commitment of staff and students from across the entire college to reduce the College’s impact on the environment”.
